I begin with the Name of Allaah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
Many things make us oblivious of the sins we commit to such an extent that we trivialize them. This attitude then leads to bigger sins and by then the barrier or the criterion to judge between right and wrong becomes broken and we lose our moral bearing.
The quality of a good Muslim lies in how much he strives to be from among the Muhsinoon (good doers).
Islam has five pillars, Iman (faith) has six articles while Ihsaan has one pillar. Ihsaan in Arabic means perfecting something and doing it well with sincerity. In the Shariah it means perfecting one’s outward and inward deeds.
In the hadith of Jibril (peace be upon him) recorded in Bukhari, the Prophet (peace be upon him) through his gift of few words favored with comprehensive speech explained what Ihsaan is. “It is to worship Allaah as if you can see Him, and although you cannot see Him, He can see you.”
Above is the highest degree of Islam which every Muslim should strive to attain. The conscious effort coupled with sincerity of purpose is the first and most important step to becoming a better Muslim.
He who thinks of the Gaze of Allaah above and the Perfect knowledge of Allaah regarding the minutest detail of what everyone does, will be sufficiently positioned to attain salvation.
Furthermore, the more one does self-introspection to ascertain the level and quality of his relationship with Allaah, the less he gets preoccupied with things that do not matter.
Sincerely so, how many Muslims sit down to take stock of their deeds and the condition of their hearts? Many sins and many flawed character. The Muslim should be very much aware of the presence of Allaah in his life, such that he pays attention to both his inward and outward reality.
Consequently, he who is mindful of his duties to Allaah and reminds himself of how tricky it is to live in this world, will be walking as if he is on a thorn infested path. One sin can destroy the good deeds of many decades.
The Muslims must check out their spiritual well-being, no sin should be trivialized and no good deeds should be belittled.
The Muslims must be conscious of Allaah and mend their relationship with fellow humans. Success lies in perfecting the inward and the outward.
Even when nobody sees us, Allaah sees us. This alone should make us good people. May Allaah ease our affairs.
