*A response to the message going round that covid19 has been mentioned in the Qur'an*
Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barkatuh. Undoubtedly, this has no basis in the Shariah and it is the work of those that seek to mislead others by interpreting the Qur'an without following the methodology of the scholars of Tafseer. Before I explain the verse referenced, I remembered back then in 2001 after the September 11 bomb attack on US, a similar misleading effort was made to prove that the bombing of the twin towers were mentioned in Qur'an 9:109 which they claim coincided with the address of the Twin towers.
Let us look at the 30th verse of Suratul Muddathir. I have said it in several occasions that in order to fully understand a verse of the Qur’an, we need to understand the context in which it appeared and the explanation given by the Salaf.
Hence, let us understand the context first.
The previous verses before it and the subsequent verses after it will offer us an understanding of the actual meaning of the verse.
Study verses 26-29 where Allaah mentions سقر(Hell Fire) and how it burns and blackens the skin. Then immediately after, Allaah says: عليها تسعة عشر [Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell)] the harf "ه" is a hidden pronoun ضمير مستتر which goes back to the سقر)؛ Hell fire) that was mentioned earlier.
The rule is, if there is an obvious meaning to a verse then it is not permissible to look for another meaning for it out of the obvious.
The subsequent verse now explains to us this 19. Allaah says: *وما جعلنا أصحاب النار الا ملائكة وما جعلنا عدتهم الا فتنة للذين كفروا....* (And We have set none but angels as guardians of the Fire, and We have fixed number (19) only as a trial for the disbelievers,...)
Hence, we should not substitute Angels with Covid19 if we do so, we will be guilty of lying against Allaah and Allaah says:
ومن أظلم ممن افترى على الله كذبا او كذب بآياته انه لا يفلح الظالمون
"And who does more wrong aggression than he who invents a lie against Allaah or rejects His verses? Verily, the Zalimun (wrong doers) shall never be successful." Qur'an 6:21
I hope this helps. Allaah Knows Best. Twitter @penabdull Instagram @Penabdul
